The debut album from this Orange County band, Appearance, straight from the current trend of Myspace phenoms and new media branching, has few real surprises in store for the listener, but is nonetheless a nice piece of work. The sound is very hook-heavy, courtesy of Chad Kulengosky primarily, but with credit due as well to session players Jason Nelson on bass and Justin McCarthy (formerly best known as the drummer in a band on MTV's Laguna Beach) on drums. The guitar work is reminiscent in many ways of U2's the Edge, with a reliance on ambient hooks rather than full-blown solos, and note-bending as a well-used bridging method. In terms of composition, the sound is really probably closer to a group from the punk-pop movement, or some post-grunge (a Jimmy Eat World, perhaps, with hints of the Foo Fighters, as in the title track). Because the compositions take so much from previously existing sounds, the album is somewhat familiar-sounding on the first listen, and a little predictable. However, the performance quality is high, and being a new band with an older sound is far from a disqualifier. The real post-grunge players will be a higher priority for new listeners, but give this one a spin as well. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide
