About This Album
Utterly ordinary but basically inoffensive, the debut EP by the Beasts of Eden is purely standard-issue Brooklyn rock, 2007 version. The core duo of lead singer Chris V and songwriting partner and lead guitarist Chris Boosahda sound as if they've ingested the last two years' worth of Pitchfork reviews in toto, regurgitating a mix of indie rock clichés that sound pleasant enough on the surface but evaporate under any close scrutiny. Even the relative high point "Only Good at Looking Good" owes most of its charm to a cannily deployed sample that repeats, unchanged, several times as the song's primary hook; without that bit of ear candy, the rest of the song sounds like the rough demo for a Strokes album cut. The rest of the EP wouldn't sound of place on the sound system of the sort of place where people still drink ironic cans of Pabst Blue Ribbon, but that's not quite enough to recommend it. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
