Assembling a compilation of the Beatles is a difficult task, not only because they had an enormous number of hits, but also because singles didn't tell the full story; many of their album tracks were as important as the singles, if not more so. The double-album 1962-1966, commonly called The Red Album, does the job surprisingly well, hitting most of the group's major early hits and adding important album tracks like "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away," "Drive My Car," "Norwegian Wood," and "In My Life." Naturally, there are many great songs missing from the 26-track 1962-1966, and perhaps it would have made more sense to include the Revolver cuts on its companion volume, 1967-1970, yet The Red Album captures the essence of the Beatles' pre-Sgt. Pepper records. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
He's got a ticket to ride and he'll take it, 'cause he's a dude and not some stuck up chick with a handful of tickets from a dozen other guys....those were the original lyrics but never caught on.... "Sorry Ringo, Paul thought we should change your lyrics a bit. "OK John, whatever you think is best."
Fab four A Great band and the music they put out I find it too hard to name any song the best. Girl,And I love her,Norwegian wood,In My Life The List goes on and on........
me too. It's kind of freaky how many truly brilliant songs these guys came up with. True "A day in the life" is frightfully awesome. I mean where does it end? Even their mediocre songs are 10 times better than what most songwiters EVER do.
don1983: I agree that most of their songs are great, but you could make the argument that TTR is not even as good as A Day in the Life if you use the expansion of pop. Basically, where does it end? I know, it's one of the debates for the ages, and that's what makes The Beatles so great. I could talk about this stuff all day.
Kidding? No way man. All the songs you listed are indeed great songs, brilliant
songs, however TTR really IS the greatest. The sheer exhuberance and joy of I want to hold your hand, etc. are undeniable, but TTR expands and builds upon the earlier works and takes off into a new musical language and sound unsurpassed in pop music. But all their songs are great.
Yeah it is a great intro to early beatles. Look at that first disc its just ridiculous-and they left out Saw her standing there, ps i love you , do you want to know. Personally these are more imp than hide your love - now they need the Red album of B rated tunes (I call your name, Cant do that...)
i don't think this is sloppy at all - this set gave me my first real taste of the Beatles when i was 8 years old and a friend's mom played it constantly. my friend and i learned all these songs and would ride our bikes down the street singing them. a really good mix from their early days.
Yes it's the Beatles, yes there are some good songs here, but you should definitely not buy these sloppy compilations. You'll be missing out on so many other amazing Beatles tunes if you skip their full length LPs and dive for a sloppily thrown together compilation such as this.
