Joel caused a stampede for high school social science classes with the patter song "We Didn't Start The Fire," a cross between Gilbert And Sullivan and rock 'n' roll that listed events in the news over the last 40 years, broken up by chants of the title. "I Go To Extremes" was a confession of emotional instability set to a strong melody and a rocking beat. There were also minor entries, such as "The Downeaster 'Alexa'," which was about Long Island fishermen, and "Shameless," which Garth Brooks turned into a country smash. agreed with Ang D., they should pick reviewers who appreciate each genre. It's wrong to have people who worship another band to write about someone they dislike. Billy Joel is an amazing musician, period.

Whoever picks AMG's reviewers needs choose people who are objective about the MUSIC and don't just pan the artist because they don't care for them. "I Go To Extremes" is a classic get-the-bloo d - p u m p i n g song. "Leningrad" and "And So It Goes" are two of his very best ballads - I'll take them over "She's Always A Woman" any day. Maybe Billy Joel might not be the reviewer's taste, but he can't deny that the man puts his soul into his music. And in the end, that's what it's all about, isn't it?

I have listened to billy joel snice long before radio play, saw him play back up too the beach bums and although this is not his best work, i think this stupid review is the one with the filler...nic e try, did you even listen before reviewing?

Haven't listened to a lot of Billy Joel, but come on, flaming an album you're supposed to be reviewing? That's cold.

Leningrad is a great song. It's a touching, personal story that is put to a strong melody. Filler - not even close. William Ruhlmann must define filler as songs that do not get played on the radio.

I wouldn't consider any of these worthless filler, sure they're not his best, but I still enjoy all of them. It's worth getting if you already have the stranger and glass houses. Leningrad is definitely an excellent song.

I'm sorry, but this album deserves at least a little better of a review. How could you call something as poignant as Leningrad "worthless filler?" I agree that about half of this album's songs are lackluster, but And So It Goes is a well-known classic. Both of those didn't even get mentioned, and I'd listen to those over I Go To Extremes or Shameless. I think the review was pretty sub-par.
