The Golden Years of Bing Crosby
About This Album
This three-CD set from the U.K. is one disc slimmer and not quite as comprehensive as the 1993 American box set Bing! His Legendary Years, 1931 to 1957, but it makes for an excellent second choice. The Golden Years of Bing Crosby focuses, as its title suggests, on the period when Crosby was firmly situated at the top of the world, beginning with his earliest hits from 1931 and following his career into the mid-'40s, by which time the crooner was being eclipsed by Frank Sinatra and others. While some finicky purists may gripe about one omission or another, or complain that some of the tracks included are marginal, the set easily succeeds at representing the core of the Crosby discography. Naturally, "White Christmas" is here, opening disc two, along with such standards as "You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me," "Swinging on a Star," "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Only Forever." The tracks are not arranged chronologically, but the sequencing works fine just the way it is. ~ Jeff Tamarkin, All Music Guide
