Since Tom Scholz is such a slow worker, there were only four Boston albums between the group's 1976 debut and this Greatest Hits collection in 1997. That may mean that there isn't much music to compile, as the reliance on their biggest-selling album, Boston, suggests, but that doesn't matter for most casual fans, since Greatest Hits gathers all of their best songs, from "More Than a Feeling" to "Amanda," on one compact disc. For the collector, the record isn't quite as appealing, even if it contains three new songs as bait. These three songs simply don't deliver the melodic punch or guitar crunch that distinguishes the group's best work. It's nice to hear original vocalist Brad Delp on "Higher Power," but "Tell Me" is slight, and an instrumental version of "The Star Spangled Banner" is nearly an insult. So, for the devoted, Greatest Hits is a mixed bag, but for less dedicated listeners, it may be all the Boston they need. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
thank you williampollak for putting a smile on my face today. an insightful, and rather simple veiw of boston's music that i get completely. dude before you seems a little tense though.
oh boo that review. Boston's star spangled banner cover is up there with Jimi's. Rock in its purest form. more bands like Boston and there would be no war or poverty. we'd all be racing to work in spacecrafts powered by rock. Oh and our jobs would be listening to Boston.
Another band overplayed way too much. If you like them listen to WZLX. All they play is Boston and Led Zepplin. They really got their moneys worth out of these two bands.
We don't have to imagine Boston without Brad. Remember Walk On? That album was just missing something; Brad was that thing, 'cause Corporate America, which had Brad, blew it away.
Boston was one of the BEST bands of the 70's.. I wished they were still together..Th e Greatest Hits Album gives you a selection from all of their albums.. GREAT ALBUM !!!!
I agree... a greatest hits when you had only 3 seriously charting albums is silly. But, to be fair, the Don't Look Back album was pretty awesome-- about half of it gets heavy air play on my local rock station, so you would have to include those tracks, too. They're inexpensive disks/downloads, so just buy the first three albums and forget this redundant greatest hits.
This is one of the best bands of all time. Their music kept me going in the 70's and 80's. They have produced a sound all their own. When you hear it, you know it is Boston, even some of their later music. Some bands currently playing need to take note of some of these great bands such as Boston, 38 Special and Chicago.
