The Inevitable Continuing
About This Album
Broadfield Marchers take a short 'n' sweet approach to their sophomore album, which sandwiches 19 power pop nuggets onto a 42-minute disc. Although brief and often messy, The Inevitable Continuing nevertheless squeaks by on the strength of its own innocence. There are no frills here, no retro packaging, and no attempt to align Broadfield Marchers with hipper groups that also take influence from past eras. The Inevitable Continuing is simply an unassuming, uncalculated album, which makes it a rarity in the nostalgic power pop field. At the same time, Broadfield Marchers don't flaunt the same chops as some of their contemporaries. While other groups on the Rainbow Quartz roster -- most notably the Lackloves -- emphasize razor-sharp pop hooks in their songwriting, Broadfield Marchers seem to shift the focus to mood instead. Double-tracked vocals (often drenched in echo) and casually strummed guitars generate some pleasant sounds, but they're delivered with a laid-back grace that fails to drive the actual songs home. Listeners are left humming a few memorable lines, particularly the stellar "Amazing Wheels," but The Inevitable Continuing still comes across as the lesser cousin to the Lackloves' Cathedral Square Park. Those looking to satisfy their craving for well-crafted pop songs won't find the best craft here, although Broadfield Marchers do present some winsome and engaging moments. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide
