Spirit Trail is a portrait of unchecked self-indulgence; its tracks, with their overly busy arrangements, go on too long, not to mention the extended instrumental piano interludes that suddenly pop up here and there and, for example, the two versions of "Preacher in the Ring," with different music and lyrics, neither of them very interesting. Musically and lyrically, Bruce Hornsby is badly in need of an editor. The music should be cut, and the lyrics to these story songs should be streamlined -- often they do not sit well on the music--- and clarified -- it's usually difficult to tell exactly what he's singing about. But none of this is to criticize Hornsby as a player. He may feel compelled to display his picture ID from his days at the Berklee College of Music in the CD booklet, but nobody has ever questioned his technical ability. Maybe, however, it's time for him to go all the way into instrumental jazz or new age music. If the lyrics to the album-closing "Swan Song" are any indication, he has some changes in mind, and not a moment too soon. It's hard to imagine that a major label is going to continue to subsidize records like this for the pop market much longer. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
So, you critize the man for making something that is arranged musically ambitious? It's a bad thing that it is not appealing to your average "pop" music fan? Go f**k yourself William Ruhlmann. Stick to reviewing Hannah Montana records.
Of course reviews are subjective, but that one is just plain awful.
If you can't recuse yourself from writing a review because of your tastes, then you have to be able to separate yourself from them. Reading the review above is like reading a vegetarian's review of Ruth's Chris...
Reviewer questions BH's merit as a "pop" artist, assuming b/c he has had some hits in the charts, he needs to stay on the pop side. Good thing for those of us who "get it" that Bruce takes a more creative and diverse view of his role and orientation in the scene. Check him out live sometime Mr. Ruhlmann, you'll see how well he connects with his audience and with musical genres ranging from rock to bluegrass to jazz. Then go back home and play with your own instrument.
just heard sunflower cat....straight rip from the deads Chinacat Sunflower...but that's what it's supposed to be....it's a fun song....I think William needs to chill out a little bit...he's deff. taking this album more seriously than Hornsby did.
Hmmm. Curious. Why so uptight, Billy? There MUST be a story behind the bad review. Whaddup, William? The only plausible reason: envy. Bill's a Dead Head. Could he be uptight cuz Bruce had the audacity to jam with the band?
Hornsby is too good for pop radio. Those of us who "get" his music recognize him for the treasure that he is. This guys brain is always creating and exploring and pushing the envelope. Fortunately he is not content with formulaic approaches that certain reveiwers are looking for. Concerts are a rare blend of creativity, skill and humor. Fascinating to listen to him chase the muse. Wish I could do it half as well.
One thing is for sure about him (William Ruhlmann) he has written most of his on bios on the sites that tell who he is... as irrelevant as any other professional art critic.
Wow, what reviewer!! Ruhlman should start a talent show where all these pop singer wannabbees from all over the country show up and audition and then compete for a major label deal! Oh, yeah, then he'd be Simon Cowl. Hey, maybe he's right, maybe no major label would continue to support something like this. Um, who cares? The majority of American music buyers who buy music at Wal-Mart that their peer group listens too? They don't care. Hornsby fans don't care. So what is the point of this review?
I think that the writer of the above overview...w i l l i a m ruhlmann...n e e d s to grab him self by the ears and pull his head out of his arse....hornsby is brilliant... able to play anything, any time with anybody....h e is one of the greatest song writers of our time...and his composition is second to none!
the sunflower cat song was actually pretty good, very funky, and cool keyboard. i'm not sure why Willam Ruhlmann is dishing on Hornsby hardcore, maybe for a personal agenta of some sort? or maybe mr. ruhlmann is looking for a brittany spear's sound in every band.
