Retrospective: The Best of Buffalo Springfield may not be definitive, but it's a good, basic overview of the group's career, containing most of the group's biggest hits and signature songs. Yes, several worthy album cuts are missing, but as a sampler, this works quite well, offering a nice introduction to the group. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Excellent group! Get the box set if you don't have it! Of course buying all three albums isn't a bad way to go either. A group that broke up way before their full promise was realized,.....one of rock's lamentable tragedies!
Dr. Mike I am in agreement with you about being inclusive of each members material. If you exclude you take away the content in which it was delivered and the memory of it's existence with the complilations. As a member of a band, I would hate to think my songs would not be included in our recordings. They weren't but, it would break my heart and the band wouldn't be the same without the ones they call out to hear in the audience. just a thought.
Continued... Again, Messina gets the shaft in the box set. The omission of his one song writing contribution to the band is a misrepresentation of the song writing of each member of the band. Although Messina's is amoung the weakest of the songs in the Springfield catalogue it should have been included in the box set.
A decent compilation but far too many great Springfield tunes missing. Poor Jim Messina only wrote one tune with the Springfield and it doesn't even show up here. The Buffalo Springfield only produced 3 albums in their life span but all three are worth purchasing. You will be missing a lot of great music by only purchasing Retrospective . There is also a great box set avaiable. to be continued...
