Sounding like a suburban, melodic white-funk-injected version of King Missile's performance art/standup comedy, "The Distance" became a novelty hit in the fall of 1996, sending Cake's second album, Fashion Nugget, to platinum status. Certainly, "The Distance" was the only reason Fashion Nugget went platinum, because the remainder of the album is too collegiate and arcane for mainstream music tastes. It isn't because it's obscure or intellectual -- it's because the band is smirking. An "ironic" cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is the key to the album, sending the signal that Cake consider themselves above everyone else, and nothing is too insignificant to make fun of. And that wouldn't necessarily have been a problem if they had the wit or musical skills that would make their music either funny or listenable. Instead, they wallow in sophomoric jokes that rely on self-consciously elaborate wordplay. Occasionally, their blend of collegiate musical styles -- funk, hip-hop, alternative rock -- makes the music easy to digest in small doses, such as "The Distance," but it isn't varied enough to prevent the album from becoming tedious when played straight thorugh. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Wow. F**k that guy. This album is brilliant, I CAN listen to it the whole way through. Cake is clever as hell. Their songs are always entertaining and are enjoyable even on the 92nd play.
What the hell is wrong with this guy, he isn't even reviewing the music, he's making a value judgment based on what he THINKS the bands intended tone is.
I love the whole album, and I don't even like "the distance" that much.
How anyone could hate on this album is beside me. I kept Cake's discography rolling on my ipod for a couple months at one point, and I'm still not sick of any of their songs.
Ha! I was actually impressed by "I Will Survive", so much that I looked in on the album. That a "serious" critic is apparently offended by Cake's spirited flippancy (oxymoron?) is all the better and gives the album a poetic legacy. Alleged between-the-lines message be damned, Cake's a fantastic band!
Has this reviewer seen a live show? I saw them 3 years ago in a small club that was packed and it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Cake is amazing!!!
The song "Imposter" by Oingo Boingo was written JUST FOR reviewers like this guy ... We don't want to hear what you THINK the album is, we wanna hear what it IS. Concentrate on the music and not your opinions, dude.
I like this album and Cake. But what do I know? I'm not a reviewer, just a fan. Apparently a plebeian one at that. *hangs head in shame* *is obviously being sarcastic*
I couldn't agree more. That is a terrible review. I don't agree with a word of it. In addition, I wouldn't say that "The Disance" is the only reason that the album went platinum. I HATE that song, but bought the CD for the rest of it. Their new stuff (everything after Comfort Eagle) is garbage, but this stuff is great.
Heh, yeah, I think we can all agree that Mr. Erlwine is not a Cake fan. Normally I am in complete agreement with his reviews. Not here. He as much as called them whitless, which is not so. A lot of people just don't appreciate smirkiness. But me, I like Cake. The guitar playing is fantastic. I know that on "Prolonging" Cake hired Jim Campilongo to play all the cool rockabilly guitar parts. On this album they do all that themselves and it sounds purty damn good.
APPARANTLY THE ALBUM REVIEWER DOESNT LIKE THEM - HONESTLY THOUGHT ALL THE REVIEWS WERE WRITTEN BY THE RECORD COMPANIES CUZ OF THE WAY THEY ALL SOUND LIKE "THE BEST BAND EVER" - ID JERK MY ALBUM FROM PANDORA WITH SUCH RINGING ENDORSEMENTS.
Haha, yeah, the reviewer is incredibly incorrect. This album has definitely stood the test of time, so far, as it still sounds incredibly modern. Not to mention AWESOME. It's funky as hell and contains many more great songs other than The Distance.
I have have been listening to Fashion Nugget since it came out, and it has never gotten old or unlistenable . I have no idea what album this guy was listening to. Also, I just looked up some of his other reviews and he raves about how Paris Hilton's album is 'just plain fun and entertaining'. This guy's frame of referenence is so skewed. He is also the nephew of the founder of Allmusic. Nepotism, anyone?
Honestly, not my favorite Cake album, but Come On Man!!!
"the album is too collegiate and arcane for mainstream music tastes." I've got news for you Stephen, we LIVE IN a collegiate and arcane society!!!!
"nothing is too insignificant to make fun of." This comes from a guy who goes by three names... Stephen Thomas Erlewine, you have successfully made yourself too insignificant to make fun of. You're a idiot sir.
It's always very entertaining to read a critic say that he thinks that a band isn't very good. I especially love the part where he says that cake isn't listenable. Because his arrogant view is law
cake doesnt think their above anyone. they just enjoy music for music's sake, i love their "i will survive". cake has a point of reference in the world, they stay grounded and light hearted. cake, and this album, are chill, fun, and creative.
If the reviewer found the songs rely too much on 'elaborate wordplay' he probably can't read above a 5th grade level. Honestly, I've seen some of his other reviews on top quality music, the guy just seems to hate music that isn't obviously easily identified into a neat little genre.
This album is awesome. Its ironic, funny, has top quality musicianship, it can be serious without making you depressed or headbang, but it can just as soon make you smirk or laugh out-loud. Listen to it.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine is just a hater. I think this album is both funny and, more than listenable, quite enjoyable. It is clever and lighthearted. Oh, and this is the only version of "I Will Survive" that I can stand to listen to.
