Cake's attempt to make a smug- and irony-free album, the band's third release does hold back the barbs a bit more than usual, even if they do fall back into familiar territory: postmodern takes on postmodern life. Flipping between earnest alt-rock rhythms and jittery, funky jazz, Prolonging the Magic works best when Cake lay on the irony extra heavy, or when they make their sober ambitions mesh slightly with the type of smart-a** pop they've based a career on (like "Never There"). At least they seem to realize their place in the alt-rock universe as a novelty band with chops, counteracting the genre's overwhelming seriousness with a light dose of heavy-handed yuks. ~ Michael Gallucci, All Music Guide
Er, joel... Dislike is the new funny. It's common for whippersnappers these days to make a joke of repulsion or anger. It's not real, and you need to google "humor."
And usually, if one doesn't like a certain band's music, one doesn't go to that band's performances... twice.
uh why should he sing along if he doesn't want to? perhaps the lead singer is insecure and needs to work on that. or he was just joking. this band is ironic, so he was probably just being a jerk for laughs. too bad no one cares about cake tho
I don't think you have a very good point, joelsteuben.
If everyone is singing along and having fun and you
just stay quite and don't try to join you'll bring down the mood and
annoy any singer.
If you like hotdogs, dont go to a hot dog factory. If the band leader's a dick, you don't have to like him. If the musics good, he's doing his purpose (which it is).
I agree with yvonne. I love their music. Saw them live twice. Second time was at a small intimate performance that was being recorded for a radio playback. They were playing "Satan is my Motor" Everyone was singng along , but me. The lead singing pointed to me , demanding I sing along, then when I did not comply he said "I don't like you." This was recorded one the live performance. Now I do not listen to them anymore. This occurred back in 1997
