There's nothing new under the sun, especially not in pop music, and there's absolutely nothing new or innovative or even particularly forward-looking about Cartel's big guitars, big hooks, and big-voiced lead singer. That's not to say that this Atlanta-based band is retro at all -- on the contrary, it's just very much a creature of its time. Call this music pop-punk if you want, but really it's just pop, and more power to them. The album opens powerfully, with two pitch-perfect exercises in hooks-wise guitar rock, the bombastic but tight "Say Anything (Else)," and "Honestly." When things start getting a bit soft it's less a problem with the music than it is a problem with the lyrics: "Save Us" is nothing but a pile of clichés and meaningless phrases ("Now it's all gone but what it takes to make it real/We're standing on the edge of this"), and there's something vaguely creepy about the football-chant phraseology in "Burn This City." Perhaps worst of all is "Minstrel's Prayer," which actually contains the line "Oh carry on, you minstrels of the world." Yeesh. But most of the songs are much less embarrassing than those three, and the big, tight guitars and cathartic chord progressions go a long way toward redeeming even those. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
Rick as much as I respect your opinion, my response to this album is completely different. Our world is built on the hopes and dreams of stupid clichés. Who doesn't want to end up happily ever after? Who doesn't want to win the girl through the purity of song? Clichés are created because they are the ever-present sentiments of society and I think it is a good thing that they are being addressed. I might be just a hopeless romantic, but listening to this album really connects me to my feelings o
Woah. Could that review be any more pathetic? The point of a review is to give an overview of a product - not to try to sound 'above' the product. Sheesh. Sounds like someone is trying to sound cooler than he is. Try again, Pandora.
haha the person who wrote that review is a f**got. maybe if they found someone who actually likes this kind of music to review this than we wouldnt get so worked up lol but i actually really really like cartel and a lot of bands like it so yeah wateva i don have to listen to them. cartel isnt embarrassing? lol
The people who write these reviews often say that a band or artist is unoriginal, but aren't the people who read the reviews usually, um, FANS? I agree with srthomas-who are the articles intended for?
I think that the guys that made Pandora kind of missed the mark when they made these "about the album"s. All they do is they copy them from a site that is more of a music review site than a music analyzing site, so whatever one person thinks about it is now what everyone that tries to read about an album reads about it.
I know what ur saying srthomas9. This guy just doesn't like Cartel. Burn This City is my favorite song of all time, there is nothing creepy about the song. I want to read some of this guys other reviews, sixty percent of the lyrics in the world are more meaningless.I really don't care so much about lyrics unless theyre absolutely horrible. Hes probably some old f*rt with nothing better to do.
Anyone else confused why pandora would link an album commentary that tears this band to peices? I mean c'mon people, who is this article intended for? Maybe I'm just erked being such a big fan of thiers but considering there are links intended to SELL this music to people you would think someone would think about what they are doing here.
