Hello Graphic Missile
About This Album
For its second album, Hello Graphic Missile, Lawrence, KS, rock quartet Conner moves up from self-releasing to a small independent label, Sonic Boom Recordings of Seattle, WA. The sound remains fairly primitive, however, and the first-time listener may be forgiven for feeling that the music doesn't suggest Lawrence or Seattle so much as it does Leeds or Crawley in England. James Duft's and Tom Wagner's harsh, ringing guitar chords slash across the propulsive, often disco-grooved rhythms of bass player Phil Bonahoom and drummer Bryce Boley, all in a manner that recalls Gang of Four, notably on the leadoff track, "Silent Film Score." It's topped off by Duft's slurred vocals, which reveal the influence of the Cure's Robert Smith not only in intonation, but also in the downcast lyrics. This provides more evidence that a band's sound is often more about its members' record collections than its place on the map.~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
