Chronicle, Vol. 1 contains every one of Creedence Clearwater Revival's original 19 hit singles -- including "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," "Green River," "Down on the Corner," "Travelin' Band," "Up Around the Band," and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" -- plus "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," which became a hit at the same time this double-record compilation was released. It's a lean, concise collection that tells you everything you need to know about Creedence. Several of the band's individual albums are essential, but Chronicle is not only an excellent introduction to the group, it offers definitive proof that the group was one of the definitive singles' bands of the late '60s. Rarely has a greatest- hits collection been so well-assembled. [The compact disc edition is hampered by the inclusion of the full-length, 11-minute album version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"; its presence slows down the momentum of the collection considerably.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
I cannot agree with the comment that it takes anything away from the album. When it came out, you could hear this song blaring from the high school all evening.
I used to listen to this one song as a kid way back in the day because I had two big brothers and it was their era song. I never knew the artists until the song started playing again in my head a few days ago and I looked it up. I can't say I am a CCR fan but I love their song "Long As I Can See The Light!"
Agreed with rhulbert - the extended Grapevine is one of the great tunes of all time - my favorite line comes from Dave Marsh: this song has more soul than the entire recorded output of the Dead.
Yet another vote from the masses in favor of the extended version of 'Grapevine'. I am a long time fan of the All Music Guide, first in book form and later on the Web, but extended songs like this were what made early 1970s FM radio so great.
You wanna have an absolutely far-out, psychedelic experience guaranteed to blow your groovy mind (dayum, it's hard to believe we really talked like that)...get your favorite sweety, an empty room somewhere, and play "Grapevine" either right behind or right in front off Inna-Godda-Da-Vidda. I did this exactly 40 years ago this month and I STILL remember the effect (man, talk about mind-blowing...phew!). As it turned out, I married the girl (but that took 22 years to pull off).
I have to agree with capriracer351, to not include Grapevine would have been an injustice, and to cut it down would have been a crime. Rolling Stone called Grapevine "the most intense 11 minutes in rock music"
The inclusion of the 11 minute version of "Heard it Through the Grapevine" on the CD version is a plus to that collection, not a minus as the reviewer claims.
