Melody and hardcore don't usually go hand in hand. But Crime in Stereo is not your average, ordinary hardcore band. There was a time when hardcore music usually meant a group of tough, sweaty, shirtless skinheads jumping on top of each other and group-screaming along to their favorite chorus. But the times they are a-changin', as evidenced by Crime in Stereo's third full-length overall, 2007's Is Dead. Although not a pure hardcore band necessarily, the group certainly contains more muscle than the average pop-punk band you'll spot on MTV, and there are certain moments that will peak the interest of hardcore admirers. But take a song like the album-opening "XXXX (The First 1,000 Years of Solitude)," which manages to combine both pop melody and hardcore -- without coming off like some slick gloss merely aimed at crossover success. But on the other hand, the group also offers tracks that do not include one iota of hardcore rage -- including such ditties as "Unfortunate Tourists" and "Choker." Some of the group's older fans may have a problem with Crime in Stereo's newer melodic direction, but like most notable groups, musical growth is a very necessary component.
