Supraphon
Janacek: Orchestral Works Vol 1 / Jilek, Brno State Phil
About This Album
One might as well call it the Lighter Janácek or Janácek for Dancing or the Janácek Disc for People Who Hate Janácek. But whatever one calls this collection of the bumptious and beguiling Lachian Dances, the lyrical and seductive Suite for Strings, and the rustic and graceful Idyll for String by Frantisek Jilek and the Brno State Philharmonic Orchestra is one of the most easy to listen to Janácek discs ever recorded. Although in the other discs of Jilek and the Brnonians' Janácek have been quite fine, the competition is sometimes too much for them in the big works and the music is sometimes too much for them in the virtuosic works. But in this collection, the music suits them down to the ground. Perhaps it's that this disc has the most deeply Moravian music on it and the Brnonians, being Moravian, just naturally let their hearts sing to its exuberant melancholy. But however one explains it or whatever one calls it, this is the best disc in Jilek and the Brnonians' Janácek series. Supraphon's 1991 and 1992 digital recordings are long on atmosphere but just a wee bit short on detail. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
