Double Barrel: The Best Of Dave And Ansel Collins
About This Album
It's hard to understand why Trojan decided to title this collection Double Barrel. While there's no question that fans of vintage reggae will recognize the name (Double Barrel remains Dave and Ansel Collins' most popular and respected album), those who already own the original album released under that title are likely to pass this one by, thinking they already own the material it contains. But, in fact, there is relatively little overlap between this 25-track best-of and the program of the original Double Barrel album. This one includes the title track, of course, along with several other rocksteady classics from that date, including the brilliant "Monkey Spanner" and "I the Third" (billed here as "Karate"). But the bulk of this material comes from other sessions. Included are several Dave Barker DJ cuts recorded by the great Lee "Scratch" Perry (who is uncredited on the album) with his house band, the Upsetters, and there are also some Ansel Collins organ instrumentals, including fine takes on the "Monkey Man" and "Sweet Sensation" rhythms (here titled "High Voltage" and "Cotton Dandy," respectively). All in all, this is a generous and well-selected overview of one of the more important duos in reggae history. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
