The fourth proper studio album by the Dave Matthews Band had a rough birth, as the group jettisoned a set of sessions recorded with their longtime producer Steve Lillywhite, starting afresh with Glen Ballard, the mastermind behind Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill. Ballard has a tremendous influence on the resulting record, collaborating with Matthews on every track and changing the direction of their sound. The change emphasizes Matthews' melodies and leadership over the group interplay that is their calling card. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
When I first heard this record, like many of the reviewers here, I was disappointed - I could not understand why Dave Matthews would not want the other musicians in his band to show off their true talants, which made their previous efforts fun and interesting. However, overtime, I have come to appreciate this album. Although it doesn't have the jamming (and Carter's awesome drumming) that the other album's have, the song's are still catchy and interesting; judge it for yourself.
If you like this album, you won't like DMB. Try Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash, Before these Crowded Streets, or their new album for their best studio stuff. If you really want to see who they are... go to one of their shows... you'll be blown away!
This band has a rep for being improvisational and basically a jam session kind of band with incredible musicianship but any good musician is going to at some point explore different musical avenues-they're still capable of great work and learning the lessons they need to learn to become even better so I have to disagree that they've given in to any kind of pressure in the industry. As an older music lover the jazz audience in the 50's was just as critical of artists when the perception was that
This is definately an excellent DMB album, despite the controversy it received upon its release. How being 'too commercial' can detract from the music is beside me.
'When the World Ends', 'The Space Between', 'What You Are', and 'Everyday' are some of Dave's most popular songs.
'So Right' and 'If I Had It All' are equally as impressive, without the hype of the first mentioned.
The remaining songs complete what is a very good album.
