Despite the musicianship and some colorful moments, this duo set by mandolinists David Grisman and Andy Statman (essentially melodic free improvisations) misses a rhythm section. The song titles (which include "Two White Boys Watching James Brown at the Apollo," "Journey to the Center of Twang" and the two-part "March of the Mandolas") are more colorful than the music, and although not without interest, this is one of David Grisman's least memorable recordings. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
I don't know, long time Grisman fan here, kinda hafta agree with the reviewer. I don't think this is Dave's best. By contrast, his "So What" acoustic duet album with Jerry Garcia has no backup band either, but it is very deep, complex and multi-textural. And it is absolutely mesmerizing. This record here seems a little on the fluffier side. It's still pretty good anyway.
The AMG review is completely off base. This is one of the most adventurous recordings in the annals of mandolin music. Grisman and Statman spontaneously composed each piece on the spot in the studio. There are no overdubs; each track is live and direct, but by no means raw. These guys are absolute masters of traditional music and manage to maintain sweet melodies and exquisite tone throughout. If you enjoy hearing genres combined, stretched, and transcended, this will be utter sonic delight.
