About This Album
These ten "lost" Dillards tunes were recorded in 1959 and left to gather moss in Doug Dillard's personal archives. Dillard's discovery of the original tapes in 2005 led to them being remastered, tweaked, and released to the public for the very first time on Varese Saraband's Vintage imprint the following year as Early Recordings 1959. Doug and Rodney were only 18 and 21 at the time, but their knack for Ozark Mountain bluegrass had already developed into something profound. While seven of the tracks are standards, three songs ("Banjo in the Hollow," "Old Blue," and an early incarnation of "Old Man at the Mill") are Dillard originals. The sound quality is remarkably good, and despite the unnecessary inclusion of Dean Webb's vocals and mandolin -- they are integrated so flawlessly that it's hard to believe that he wasn't in the studio some 40 years ago -- these Early Recordings are the real deal. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
