A portrait of the artist as a young man, The Nightfly is a wonderfully evocative reminiscence of Kennedy-era American life; in the liner notes, Donald Fagen describes the songs as representative of the kinds of fantasies he entertained as an adolescent during the late '50s/early '60s, and he conveys the tenor of the times with some of his most personal and least obtuse material to date. I remember seeing a cool black & white video with this when it first came out. 1950's look with Buddy Holly glasses and poodle skirts. When great with a fantastic tune!

@reed53c: Technically this IS Steely Dan--it's pretty much the same group from Gaucho, minus Walter Becker. I think Becker's absence is why this album is not nearly as sarcastic as the Dan's "proper" albums. There might be a hint of irony in these songs, but they seem more like happy and/or bittersweet memories of youth. |

This is an album that when it first came out and even if you heard it for the first time you would have a very hard time guessing the year.
THAT is when you are a genius. Your music is timeless and always seems fresh and new. |

I honestly though Steely Dan wrote some of these. Boy was I wrong. Gotta have this album.

A college favorite--wh a t a vibe this record has! Grooves for days and makes you think at the same time.

The whole CD is very rich in sound and invention. Although songs 1,4,5,& 7 are some of this great artist's best efforts to date.

With the exception of green flower street and ruby baby, which leave a formulaicd taste in your mouth, this is a superb album, and a great way to prolong the old SD magic...

I am currently listening to the title song 'The Nightfly.' I enjoy just about everything written sung by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - Steely Dan.
