Donald Glaude
Mixed Live: 2nd Session
About This Album
Though he's a veteran West Coast mixer and producer,
Donald Glaude
was admittedly less familiar with the English dancefloor chaos typical of the Gallery at Turnmills, his assignment for a second session in Moonshine's
Mixed Live
series. The Gallery is a hard-house heaven boasting
Tall Paul
as a resident and a cast of usual suspects who include some of the biggest names in British DJing:
Judge Jules
,
Seb Fontaine
, Brandon Block, Sister Bliss, and Cor Fijneman. DJ and dancefloor turned out to be a perfect match, as
Glaude
's outré flair and widely varying mixing style -- from house-party panic to dizzying techno and back -- inspires the audience many times over (and all of the screaming caught by Moonshine's microphones).
Glaude
goes deep for several minutes with Kevin Dennis Pierre's "When I Was in Milan II," reaches a nadir (and references
Kraftwerk
) halfway through Marco Bailey's "Start Point," and deftly pulls out of it in time for detours through loop techno (a Mac Zimms mix), breakbeat funk (a remix of hip-hop hero
Afrika Bambaataa
), and Eurodisco ("Air Race" by Jose Nunez). Much more so than the usual tasteful mix from
Tall Paul
or
Jules
, it's clear
Glaude
's really working the mix, with at least as much effort being expended behind the decks as in front of them. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
