Positively Dumptruck
About This Album
On its sophomore effort, Dumptruck used a real producer (the estimable Don Dixon) and almost lost its soul in the process -- Dixon does a good job of brightening up the colors in the band's sound and coaxes hooks seemingly out of thin air, but there are moments when it seems as if he and the band are infatuated with studio effects; the echo level on "Secrets" is tasteless, and the drums are seriously overprocessed on "Autumn," for example. But Dumptruck's ensemble sound and songcraft have both matured significantly since its debut, and there are several real gems on this program, including the Byrds-meets-Joy Division jangle-mope of "Back Where I Belong" and the downright lovely "Autumn Light." The five bonus tracks on this CD reissue include one outtake from the Don Dixon sessions and four tough, stripped-down demo tracks recorded at Boston's legendary Fort Apache studio in 1986. This album shows one of Boston's finest alt-pop bands beginning to come into its own. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
