About This Album
Earl Greyhound's eponymous four-track EP sounds of another time and place -- the '70s, to be exact. Gritty power pop gems like "Teenage Kidnap" and "Not Gonna Wait" reference (but never plagiarize) any number of classic bands, from Badfinger to Big Star to T. Rex. As for the remaining two cuts, "Welcome Back Father" has a loose, Faces/Black Crowes-ish vibe, while the dirgier, foot-dragging riff of "Fashion" recalls the oft-overlooked Burning Tree. Some might cite Lenny Kravitz as another, more contemporary comparison, but it's frankly been years since Lenny's sounded this authentically retro -- not carefully coifed to be so. Also, guitarist Matt Whyte is a restrained guitar hero candidate, and his lead and bassist Kamara Thomas' backing vocals mesh quite nicely throughout -- a promising start all around. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
