The Equals were a tantalizing band, and at their best they mixed pop and R&B with a potent dose of ska-level energy, producing impossibly catchy songs like "Baby Come Back" or early examples of topical pop-soul like "Black Skinned Blue Eyed Boys." At their worse, they churned out straight bubblegum fare like "Rub a Dub Dub" and "Honey Gum," and tended toward a blustery sameness. A two-disc overview of their career called First Among Equals on Ice Records is the way to go if you're looking for a thorough collection, but this single-disc set trims things down nicely, and given the high filler quotient on the Ice anthology, might even be preferable for casual listeners. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
