It seems like a minor miracle that Evanescence released their second album at all, given the behind-the-scenes toil and trouble that surrounded the aftermath of their 2003 debut, Fallen, turning into an unexpected blockbuster. Actually, so much drama followed Evanescence that it's hardly the same band anymore. Certainly, pivotal songwriter/guitarist Ben Moody is no longer with the band, leaving not long after Fallen had become an international success, and sometime after that, they lost their bassist -- leaving behind Amy Lee as the indisputable leader of the band. She always was the face, voice, and spirit of the band anyway -- dominating so that it often seemed that she was named Evanescence and not fronting a band called that -- but by the time the group finally released their long-awaited second album, The Open Door, in October 2006, there was no question that it was her band, and she has learned well from the success of Fallen. Pushed to the background are the Tori-isms that constituted a good chunk of the debut -- they're saved for the brooding affirmation of a closer, "Good Enough," and the churning "Lithium," which most certainly is not a cover of Nirvana's classic (that song never mentioned its title, this repeats it incessantly) -- and in their place is the epic gothic rock (not quite the same thing as goth rock, mind you) that made Lee rock's leading witchy woman of the new millennium. And she doesn't hesitate to dig into the turmoil surrounding the band, since this truly is all about her -- she may artfully avoid the ugliness surrounding the lawsuit against her manager, whom she's alleged of sexual harassment, but she takes a few swipes against Moody, while hitting her semi-famous ex, Shaun Morgan of Seether, directly with "Call Me When You're Sober," as blunt a dismissal as they come. To hear her tell it, she not only doesn't need anybody, she's better on her own. Yet artists aren't always the best judge of their own work, and Lee could use somebody to help sculpt her sound into songs, the way she did when Moody was around. Not that she's flailing about necessarily -- "Call Me When You're Sober" not only has structure, it has hooks and momentum -- but far too often, The Open Door is a muddle of affections. Sonically, however, it captures the Evanescence mythos better and more consistently than the first album -- after all, Lee now has no apologies of being the thinking man's nu-metal chick, now that she's a star. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
I think Amy Lee is one of the best female vocalists out there right now. Evanescence music tends to sound the same (I have Fallen and when I put it on random, I can't always tell what song is playing until the vocals start because the instrumentation is often so similar) but it's generally an enjoyable listen regardless. Tarja is kind of in her own category, but I think Amy Lee comes close to her in power and volume. This genre's other ladies are weak-voiced otherwise, except for Epica's singer.
I don't know the exact time of year yet, guys, but hang in there! as a wild guess, I'd expect the latest would be a summer release or they would be done recording by winter 2010 or early spring. inhuman torture, yes, but let's hang on, everyone! :)
... Sharon, Amy, Cristina, Tarja, Liv, Anette, they ALL have beautiful voices! each of them have different ranges so I don't both comparing too much. they ALL sing well.
Evanescence's new album will come in 2010, guys! :D
Sharon Den Adel and Amy Lee are about even, in my opinion. Sure, Sharon may have a more feminine voice, but Amy's voice holds more passion, whether on stage or on album. Tarja has a pretty good voice, but even though some of you may not like her voice that much, remember, she IS a trained OPERA singer. And the new singer, Anette? She SUCKS! I'm sorry, but her voice and style is just not right for the type of music she sings. She's only good in The Islander. Evanescence, new album, please!!!!!!!!
haha amy lee pales in comparison to sharon den adel (within temptation) and christina scabbia (lacuna coi) both of which have more experience. im British and people over here like evanescence but are loving lacuna coil and WT
Talk about over-rated and out dated.... Step aside Amy lee and let the real talent take the stage... Check out Allyptic, Milica's voice is hauntingly angelic and makes Amy Lee sound like she's a banshee with laryngitis!!
Barbara/youareelsewhere: Liv Kristine has a kinda etheral voice which is kind of beautiful, but i prefer Sharon den Adel's voice and Amy Lee's. Tarja's voice is a little too overpowering and nasel-y for me
I agree with YouAreElsewh e r e to a point. Liv Kristine has a beautiful, mystical voice, but she always seems to get thrown with the crummiest guitarist (which includes her husband.) Also, Tarja. That's all that needs to be said. Perfect = Tarja. Amy Lee is good, though, and very pretty.
amy lee has the best vioce in the WORLD!!! shes not like all those other stupid people (cough- MILEY CYRUS-cough) who have no vocal talents whatsoever, but are still famous. no...amy is something else!
A) not paul. B)When I first got the album in October of 2oo7(?), I adored it, but gradually came to loathe it. I think I might like it again.... but this album definatly lacks the elegance and sheer beauty of Fallen and Origin. this is raw. it needs direction. Yet somehow, it still manages to hit a metaphorical chord with my personal fav "Good enough." And no- I know that none of my sentences go together, thanks.
lovn' it, more optimistic, when/will there be a new album/tour? Almost 50 years young girl, married w/ 3 daughters. I can surely relate to her lyrics...... but my fave is "Mystery" . . . . . good thing the goth thing wasn't out in the 70's, don't know if I wou
I bought it when it came out, first listen totally hated it. I still don't like it, but it does slowly grow on you. Very slowly, Amy Lee is amazing just bring back the darkness.
BILLY BOB JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree, it takes a few listenings to get into The Open Door. I wasn't sure if I'd like it when I first heard it (except of course the single "Call Me When You're Sober, when I already knew I loved), but the record grew on me. I still think Fallen is better, but Evanescence is still one of my current fave bands.
