About This Album
There aren't many falcons spotted flying around Brooklyn, New York, but this didn't stop the four gentlemen that comprise the group known as Falcon. But according to their bio, the band is not named after the flying feathered creature, but rather, a chap who goes by the name of Jared Falcon. In fact, their Myspace bio explains it as such -- "From 1986-88, Jared Falcon attended Petaluma Junior High in Petaluma, California. He played baritone sax in the orchestra and did not do particularly well in school. However, he was a songwriting prodigy, writing close to a song a day and recording each onto a Fisher Price tape recorder. This practice started in January 1987 and ended, 336 songs later, in February 1988, when Mr. Falcon was institutionalized. Luckily for us, however, Jared Falcon's classmates from Petaluma Junior High, Shannon Ferguson and Neil Rosen, have since found those tapes. Both now living in New York City, Neil and Shannon have finally formed the band that will bring these amazing songs to life." The music that comprises Falcon's 2008 self-titled EP is quite comparable to the fractured psychedelic alt-pop of such groups as the Flaming Lips (singer Rosen's vocals are a dead ringer at times for the Lips' Wayne Coyne), as evidenced by such standouts as "Listen In," "Birds and Mice," and "The Sandfighter." Falcon is a short but sweet intro to a trippy yet rocking band. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
