About This Album
Issued after a trio of releases for Spectral and just after his debut 12" for Perlon as Jabberjaw, this self-titled disc pieces together the three 12" singles Ann Arborite Matthew Dear released on Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 during 2002 and early 2003. When operating under the name of False, Dear's tech-house productions are often at their most crisp and stripped down, making them a suitable match for Hawtin's label. These ten tracks are characterized by minute vocal blips, clipped percussive snips, and a varied rhythmic palette that entails dense throbs, piledriving thumps, and wobbly, hollowed-out globules. Hear the appropriately titled "Kickball" for an example of the last quality, and especially hear the less appropriately titled ".wav Pool" for its dense chug and impressively heady interweavings, drop-outs, and drop-ins. Although the tracks are wound tightly and are full of tension, they are also full of humor and are extremely fit for physical release on the dancefloor -- a setting where Dear's gaze is permanently fixed. Hopefully the first in a line of overviews surveying his vinyl releases, it shouldn't be too long before he's placed in the same context of some of his elders -- such as Ricardo Villalobos -- rather than simply being compared to them. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
