What looked at first like a premature marketing ploy -- a greatest-hits collection after only three albums? -- now makes some historical sense, for founding member Lee Ritenour left the quartet not long after the CD's release. So this is in essence a summary of Fourplay's first edition, a collection of mildly funky, ethereally voiced selections from Fourplay, Between the Sheets, and Elixir, where Ritenour, Bob James, Nathan East, and Harvey Mason integrate their personalities into a smoothly homogenized whole. To sweeten the pot for the hardcore fans, Fourplay recorded three new tracks for the album -- Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" with vocals by Take 6, "4 Play and Pleasure," and "Any Time of Day" -- all fairly uneventful. The musicianship is impeccable, the production velvety, and despite the suitable-for-lovemaking-and-commuting stamp of approval, one wishes that these fine players would just cut loose and really rip once in a while. ~ Richard S. bob james contributions with his partners East, Mason, and Ritenour and later Larry Carlton on future collaborations are genuine majestic and a wondrous sound
Saw Fourplay in the mid 90's at a night time art&music festival in San Antonio. When they started to play everybody in the art section stopped and started walking over to the stage wondering who this group was. More and more people came over filling the entire park to listen to this unknown group. They were fantastic and the hit of the festival. We found out later they called themselves Fourplay.
Fourplay brings back alot of really good memories during that time just before this albumm came out. They are and have been at the top of my jazz groups. 101 East Bound, Chant, After the Dance, Bali Run, and Between the Sheets, and Amoroso! F-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c! Remind of other favorites, Praful, Norman Brown, and Great Joe Smaple.
one of the best quartet assembled in contemporary jazz, they just creates ultra- smooth beautiful music that would last for decades, maybe the best since the Beatles!!
Very smooth, such talented players together only results in the best. Makes you feel like you are actually gliding down the highway...(101 East)..even when you're still sitting at home!
