This is the two-disc soundtrack to a 1992 television miniseries about the life of Frank Sinatra. There is no musical scoring, and there are no re-recordings. Rather, this is a collection of 30 songs recorded between 1931 and 1979, most by Sinatra, although Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, and Billie Holiday also make appearances. What is notable about the set is that it is the only album to combine tracks from Sinatra's recordings on Columbia, RCA Victor, Capitol, and Reprise, and thus the only one offering the breadth of his work over a period of 40 years. Of course, it remains a sampler, and there's far more great Sinatra material, but the unique circumstances make this an excellent compilation for the beginner. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
