Bright, brilliant, melodic, and infectious, Telemann's Paris Quartets are deservedly among the most popular of late-Baroque chamber works. And while there have been many first-rate recordings of the works in the digital era -- one thinks immediately of the masterful Sigiswald Kuijken, Wieland Kuijken, Barthold Kuijken, and Gustav Leonhardt recording from 1996 -- this 2007 re-release of the Freiburger BarockConsort's 2002 recording surely deserves to be heard by listeners who love the Paris Quartets. For one thing, the Freiburger's playing is as spot-on as the best of its competition -- listen to the musicians as they tear through the G major Quartet's central Presto. For another thing, the ensemble is lusher and more colorful than most -- with not only the standard quartet of Karl Kaiser on flute, Petra Müllejans on violin, Kirstin von der Goltz on cello, and Torsten Johann on harpsichord and organ, but also Hille Perl on viola da gamba and Lee Santana on lute, their continuo section has more depth and texture than most. The most important thing, however, is the sense of energy and joy the Freiburger players bring to the music. In piece after piece, in movement after movement, the music comes vibrantly alive -- and immediately unforgettable. Recorded in clear, vivid digital sound by Harmonia Mundi, this disc will please the neophyte and the most discriminating Baroque music aficionado. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
