About This Album
It's so interesting how a popular solo pianist known for impressionistic piano spends much of his liner notes detailing the inspirations of jazz giants like John Coltrane and rockers like the Doors and Procol Harum (a moody cover of that band's "Too Much Between Us" is a bonus on this edition). The improvisational midsection of the opening track, "Colors/Dance," was created via inspiration from "Light My Fire" and "My Favorite Things." The new enhanced edition also includes sheet music to Winston's original song "Longing/Love." For those new to the Winston experience, Autumn was Winston's 1980 breakthrough album that earned him international notoriety and enabled him to continue recording and performing for audiences. Chiefly influenced by the Doors' first album in 1967, Autumn features the captivating ten-minute-plus opening track "Colors/Dance," which begins as a multifaceted musical impression of the yellow cottonwoods of Miles City and Billings, MT, where the pianist grew up. The other thematically based tracks include "Woods," "Road," "Moon," "Sea," and "Stars." The album has sold over half a million units. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
