The "difficult second album" is one of the perennial rock & roll clichés, but few second albums ever were as difficult as Use Your Illusion. Not really conceived as a double album but impossible to separate as individual works, Use Your Illusion is a shining example of a suddenly successful band getting it all wrong and letting its ambitions run wild. Taking nearly three years to complete, the recording of the album was clearly difficult, and tensions between Slash, Izzy Stradlin, and Axl Rose are evident from the start. The two guitarists, particularly Stradlin, are trying to keep the group closer to its hard rock roots, but Rose has pretensions of being Queen and Elton John, which is particularly odd for a notoriously homophobic Midwestern boy. Conceivably, the two aspirations could have been divided between the two records, but instead they are just thrown into the blender -- it's just a coincidence that Use Your Illusion I is a harder-rocking record than II. Stradlin has a stronger presence on I, contributing three of the best songs -- "Dust n' Bones," "You Ain't the First," and "Double Talkin' Jive" -- which help keep the album in StonesyAerosmith territory. On the whole, the album is stronger than II, even though there's a fair amount of filler, including a dippy psychedelic collaboration with Alice Cooper and a song that takes its title from the Osmonds' biggest hit. But it also has two ambitious set pieces, "November Rain" and "Coma," which find Rose fulfilling his ambitions, as well as the ferocious, metallic "Perfect Crime" and the original version of the power ballad "Don't Cry." Still, it can be a chore to find the highlights on the record amid the overblown production and endless amounts of filler. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
love the stuff on here - but they should've shut axl up a bit and done an album that made sense instead of letting axl try to be elton john, the stones, and the most dangerous band in the world all at the same time.
When I was in Ct. this album came out and about that time I jammed on down to Daytona Beach Fla. and things got wild to say the least. the year was 1991, the band was G N R and together we raised alot of hell down there
What the guy says is mostly shrewd observation. The album lacks cohesion, and wanders aimlessly. It's not a great work of art when considered as a whole. Having said that, I still love half the songs on the disc - lets face it there is some sick hard rock in there and GnR kicks a**. Its understandable to get 'up in arms' when some dude trashes your favorite band, but in the end constructive criticism is what pushes the art forward.
Axl Rose is the the deffinition of guns N roses, And guns n roses is one of the top bands of all time. If anything, your the douche. Who the hell do you think you are?!
I agree wampuss, " Wow it's UNDERGROUND" whatever that means at this point is beyond me, I think reviewers like to consider themselves "insiders" , because they review bands, they think the are somehow connected to the bands and personalities who create music, just like idiots who define who they are by the bands they listen to i.e. punks, metal, rap etc. Pathetic.
Is it just me, or do all of the reviewers on this site post awesome reviews for crap nobody has heard of, and then slam all popular artists/albums/songs?
"Hey guess what? I've heard of a band you haven't! I'm part of the underground music scene! Look at me!" Whatever, D-bag.
Man is that critic a knob. "Notoriously homophobic" what the F does that even mean ?, better yet what does it have to do with a MUSIC critique? My God ?,
Great album ! Overblown ? Yeah. why the F not? It's rock n roll you pansy!!
Never politically correct, like you liberal wuss thought police want us all to be. I am done ranting but jeez!! Get new reviewers, Pandora this guy BLOWS!!
I couldn't disagrre more with the analysis by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, I find both Use Your Illusion to be amazing album. Had Led Zeppelin kept on making albums this is what they would sound like, with a little Queen and Elton John thrown into the mix.
Porks...I agree, though, the G'n'R BAND is one of my top 5 rock BANDS of all time. Duff, Izzy, Slash and Steven were (are) a force. If those 4 would tour I could give 2 s**ts who's singing. I'd be there in a moment!
