Cycle Of Pain
About This Album
Recorded nearly four years after HavocHate's debut album, 2005's Cycle of Pain distills everything that was great about This Violent Earth into songs that are more focused and even harder-hitting than before. However, some of the debut's charm is missing from this outing. Singer Jon Mallek left the band in the lengthy interim between releases, and while replacement Tim Bouchee still thankfully avoids the usual Cookie Monster vocal shtick, his voice is more gravelly and less distinctive than Mallek's cleaner vocal style. However, Bouchee redeems himself on the album's slower songs, like "Fiction" and "Speak No More," which have an appealing New Wave of British Heavy Metal sound that contrasts well with the more Pantera-influenced riffing of the rest of the album. For all their experience, HavocHate seem to be a band that's still growing up in public, but although parts of Cycle of Pain feel a little awkward, this is clearly a transitional record. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
