About This Album
Atomhenge 76 is a short two-CD set (total duration: 85 minutes) recorded in (one assumes) 1976 but presented without any more detailed information in terms of date, location, or personnel. It doesn't matter; this one ranks among the best Hawkwind live albums. For what appears to be an official bootleg, the sound is very good and the performance is top mid-'70s Hawk. All the instruments come out clearly. The set list includes a handful of songs from the then-current LP Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music. "Reefer Madness," "Chronoglide Skyway," and "Steppenwolf" all get exciting treatment, the latter in an extended form including a nice violin solo. The band rocks like crazy on "Brainstorm"; when the saxophone starts blowing one could mistake it for a Van der Graaf Generator song. "Hassan I Sahba" (also known as "Assassins of Allah") constitutes another highlight, as do "Uncle Sam's on Mars" and "Sonic Attack," but these two are available in better performances on other recordings. Atomhenge 76 will satisfy every serious fan and could supply an enjoyable first experience in live Hawkwind if found at a decent price. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
