About This Album
Concentration Face/Homeboy combines a DVD documenting Hella's 2004 Japanese tour with a CD of four new studio tracks. After the lengthy opener, "Madonna Approaches R&B Blonde Wreckages" is startlingly brief, clocking in at just over two minutes. But it sounds incredible, the drums rumbling and shattering under some kind of tweaked keytar effect to create the triumphant, unheard theme music to a Cosmic Ark for the next thousand years. Appropriately it ends with the squelching blast effect from Atari's Asteroids. Homeboy's remaining tracks continue like this, offering tinfoil-hat chaos interspersed with moments of Zen. Homeboy's cover sticker refers to the "hit single" (har har har), a 12-minute epic called "If I Were in Hella I Would Eat Lick" that features Zach Hill and Spencer Seim's usual blather of schizoid pots 'n' pans drumming and uneven surface noise. About two minutes in there's a snippet of loping melodic twang, like a honky tonk guitar caught in a windstorm. Then a spaceship lands to crescendos of an organ, and waves of indistinguishable noise crest and subside until your brain starts to get it. Hella's rhythms are sensed rather than heard. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
