About This Album
Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert's third duo album, and their first in ten years, was a live disc on which the two singers, backed by piano accompaniment, performed separately and together a varied 19-song set that evoked their heritage in the form of selections associated with Woody Guthrie, the Weavers, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, and Phil Ochs, and that addressed contemporary concerns such as homosexual and abortion rights. Two of the best songs were anthems to perseverance by Janis Ian -- the title tune (written with Jess Leary) and "Through the Years." Near's four originals, though two of them bore 1980s copyrights, reassured fans that she was still writing, and well, at least occasionally. But the real revelation came with "Agitator" and "Build High the Bridge," two promising songs drawn from the musical work American Agitator, about labor activist Mother Jones, and co-written by Gilbert. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
