The Greatest Hits
About This Album
There's no doubt that the recordings the Impressions made for ABC Records from 1961 to 1968 were arguably the group's greatest and the ones that certainly made the career of Curtis Mayfield. This best of compilation features 16 rock-solid testimonies to the man's genius, all crafted like the two-minute 30-second R&B symphonies they are. Even on the love songs like "I'm So Proud" and "Talking About My Baby," there's a real sense of pride and purpose to these recordings seldom found in commercial pop, rock or R&B. From 1961's "Gypsy Woman" through "It's All Right," "Keep On Pushing," "Amen," "People Get Ready," and "Woman's Got Soul" right into 1967's "We're a Winner," these sides are the soundtrack for the '60s civil rights movement and as much a part of the history as the events they were the background for. A greatest-hits package that belongs in everybody's collection for a whole variety of good reasons. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide
