Obsessed with carnality as he is, it was only a matter of time before Jason Mraz realized that it's better to sound sexy than to blather about it incessantly. This monumental moment arrives on his third album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, easily his sleekest collection of sounds and his only album to contain a suggestion of seduction within its grooves. Actually, We Sing is Mraz's only album to actually groove, as he sets down his acoustic guitar for much of the album and rides along on smooth rhythms partially indebted to '80s blue-eyed soul by Hall & Oates and Steve Winwood -- in that sense, the album recalls John Mayer's Continuum -- but he relies more heavily on Thriller, mixing it up with some modern neo-soul that gives this a surprisingly soulful sound. Mraz can glide on these surfaces, leaning on the gentle art of insinuation instead of goosing his paramour, but old habits die hard: it's only a matter of time before he punctures the seduction by scatting sophomorically, slipping in juvenile come-ons ("You make my slacks tight"), or stuttering manic syncopations on "The Dynamo of Volition." Mraz is also prone to terminal cuteness, drafting in a kids chorus to close out the coda of "Coyotes" and mewling out phrases like "always a goody doer," and while these are often so close-miked and forthright they're hard to ignore, they're also just not as prevalent as they were on the icky Mr. A-Z. Also, they're cleverly camouflaged beneath that gossamer gloss, typified by the quite catchy "Butterfly," whose Quincy Jones-styled horns disguise his mildly queasy oral sex puns. Mraz's lyrics don't stand up to such close scrutiny -- something the McCartney-esque, perhaps autobiographical divorce ballad "Love for a Child" ("Was it my mom who put dad out on his a**/Or the other way around") makes plain -- but the nice thing about the soulful shimmer of We Sing is that it's so slick that it's easy to ignore the gibberish spilling out of Mraz's mouth and just enjoy the sunny, easy sound. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
reviewers are paid to review albums and critique them. if you don't agree with Erlewine, fine, but don't hate on him. we all have different tastes, jeez. i myself agree with some of his comments, and think that Mraz is mostly fluff, but nice sounding fluff.
Totally agree with y'all about the reviewer.. besides.. isn't he saying "good deed doer" (not "goody doer" like the reviewer says). Maybe actually listen before you trash..
Why is Erlewine so snide about Mraz in every review? As a musician, I easily recognize Mraz' talent as a songwriter and performer. Erlewine's cynical attitude makes me question his credibility.
The biggest song on this album, "I'm Yours" is extremely repetitive, no real melody or interesting lyrics at all. The whole thing is well-suited to background music at a dentist, where you're too preoccupied and anxious to be able to stand anything but the most relaxing fluff possible, but at any time when you can actually listen to it, it falls apart in the worst way.
This reviewer has trashed Jason Mraz more times than I can count. Jason Mraz is a beloved artist, and this album is an incredible piece. I love Jason Mraz, and I don't know anyone else who doesn't.
Amen Xtina! All my friends listen to that crap. It's Soooo Annoying Listen to real music people! And the Reviewer is grudging against Mraz! Real Music FTW!
Absolutely loved this album. I agree with the other commentary about the reviewer. While I do see this album as a different tone, I see it more as Mraz spreading out his vocal and lyrical talents. This is a cd that actually has a wonderful beat to it.
This guy reviewing the album has got to have something against J Mraz....... I just bought this CD and I pretty much loved every song the first time I listened. I'm glad there are new artists coming out that actually care about lyrical content and rhythms and the song as a story... Rather than 95% of the sh*t on the radio that is just a bass line with a catchy hook. This reviewer needs to kick rocks and take some zoloft.
The tone of the reviewer's comments is a bit offputting: Sir, While your opinions about the value of the music in time's eyes are welcome, your word choice betrays ..."goosing his paramour..."!? Come on, buddy, give me a break.
Just a thought, since we're choosing to listen to this music, there's a good chance we like it. Reading harsh reviews of artists that I love is irritating at best, can we please have someone who doesn't hate (or dare I ask, who is neutral)? That would be greatly appreciated
Ummm, everybody needs to lay off emcard1. "This guy is terrible" is referring to the critic writing this review, not Jason Mraz. Emcard1, I agree with you wholeheartedly. This review is actually complimentary as compared to this douchebag's review of Mr. A-Z. Surely they could find someone who is not a prude and has some semblance of a sense of humor to do these reviews. Sexual innuendo is funny because ultimately, sex is funny. And funny is just what Jason does.
Pandora really does need some one less friggin biased to right these reviews! This isn't the only biased review this guy has written either. It just happens to be the one that I take the most offense too. Jason Mraz is AMAZING, stupid!
emcard1!!!!
first of all...y'all, wat are u country?!
and secondly i bet ur just one of those emo screamo listeners that why u think this guy is tupid...he is not! he is hackin amzinG!
jeez, can y'all over at pandora get someone else to review mraz's albums? this guy is terrible (is that enough to say or should i go on for a few paragraphs taking my personal problems out on him? y'all seem to approve of this method from what i've read here).
Should I be offended by this review...i love me some Mr.AZ. He is soulful...imma need you Mr. Stephen not to hate on the orginality of this man. sorry but he is so not the cookie cutter pop star you are looking for him to be.
I'm glad to see the same reviewer crapping all over this album too. Yikes ! Jason Mraz is great ! His music is wonerful ! Your reviews are disgraceful and rude.
I also think that this review is quite biased...some of the reasons given above as to why the reviewer dislikes Mraz happen to be the reasons I like his lyrics as well as his music. What happened to valuing originality rather than cookie-cutter conformity?
Goodness Stephen. People who read about the album probably like the artist and don't want to hear you slander him. This is supposed to be about the ALBUM, not the artist. These reviews are meant to be unbiased, but this one clearly isn't. Please, do something more productive with your time than bad-mouth a sucessful and talented musician.
Yea, i think a lot of the comments are very below the belt, and just about the artist himself, instead of the album. I'm a new Mraz fan -thanks to Pandora- and I find him to be amazing.
