he has his moments in the dumps, but overall his work is moving and memorable... besides the fact that it always has the killer hook that a song needs to catch and hold the hearts of the public. superb work.
I love Lennon but really, My Mummy's Dead? Power to the People?
Not his best moments. Overall you cannot deny what he gave the world musically
but he was always too easily influeced by whomever he was collaborating with,
His best partner was McCartney. He needed someone to separate the good from bad, and the lack of an equal artist explains the weak material he released as a solo act.
I don't agree. 100% of this album is top notch. His internal struggles are what make this album brilliant and I think the critics and the general public recognize this. It revealed to everyone that Lennon was a much more complex personality than the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Hard Day's Night character we had met in 1964. He never again would be able to match the material on Plastic Ono Band.
Reading the info above just confirms: the critics love Lennon. Erlewine views this LP as nothing but positive.
As a fan & listener who bought the LP when it first came out, my take is a bit more reasonable. After releasing a couple of real stinkers with Yoko, we were desperate for anything halfway decent from John. Finally, he gave us this & we were more than relieved that about 50% of the material was top-notch and the other was at least listenable. His internal struggles didn't really matter.
