About This Album
Much like 20/20, the Kings drew from many influences to shape their sound: the simplicity of power pop mixed with the hard edge of garage rock with a dash of new wave thrown in for good measure. The group's claim to fame is unquestionably "Switchin' to Glide" (which was parodied by a local Detroit radio station in the early '80s under the title "Catch a Good High" by morning radio personality Dick the Bruiser), followed shortly thereafter by this two-fer's opening track, "The Beat Goes On." But the group had much to offer beyond that, delivering hard-driving rock and even sounding a bit like the solo album from Kiss guitar wizard Ace Frehley at times, especially "Love Store." This comparison makes reasonable sense as the Kings produced their major works with Bob Ezrin, who worked with Kiss during their glory years of world domination. During the disc's second half, a majority of the tracks are meandering and a bit unfocused when compared to their debut. But that shouldn't detract anyone from checking out the rich and brilliant legacy the group has to offer. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
