This is a good introduction to Lionel Hampton. Not only does it capture Hampton as a bandleader in his prime, but spotlights the musicians who recorded with him at the time: Johnny Hodges, Chu Berry, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb, Johnny Griffin, Dizzy Gillespie. These vintage RCA recordings are synonymous with Hampton, and include "How High the Moon," "Hamp's Boogie Woogie," "Star Dust," and his signature tune, "Flyin' Home." Hommage was released in 2003 on the French label EPM, so it may be slightly difficult to obtain, but well worth the search. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
