Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures; Cockaigne Overture
About This Album
Of course, most of the people who are likely to want to hear Jacqueline du Pré and John Barbirolli's recording of Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto have already heard it. Since their recording was released nearly 40 years ago, it has been acknowledged to be the classic recording of the work. Du Pré's superlative musicianship and her sublimely soulful interpretation, coupled with Barbirolli's sensitive and compassionate conducting and the London Symphony's strong and supple playing made their recording the most poised, the most passionate, the most convincing, and the most compelling performance of Elgar's elegiac masterpiece ever recorded. That du Pré and Barbirolli's superb performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto was coupled with Janet Baker and Barbirolli's superb performance of Elgar's Sea Pictures only made the record more appealing. And that on this reissue, the Cello Concerto and Sea Pictures have been coupled with John Barbirolli's magnificent recording of Elgar's Cockaigne Overture only makes this disc more appealing. If there is anyone out there who has not heard the greatest recording of Elgar's Concerto ever made, this reissue is urgently recommended. EMI's remastered sound is even warmer and richer than the original LP. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
