What I would like to know is why you people think Classical Music (a gross generalization in its own right) is worthy of distinction above any other genre? Parliament Funkadelic has a 30 piece band as well and yet the funk music aficionados don't demand special classification. Reggae music pieces are predominantly referred to as riddims but no one on Pandora cares. I will totally agree that a top tier symphony is a piece of art and the composition its self knows no limits except the
imagination of the musician but for the love of god lighten up. This web site is mind blowing in its accessibilit y of songs and all you can think of is that “song” is the wrong word to use. Some time you should check out what other Pandora users say when commenting about "Hip Music". "I love Pandora" "This song changed my life" "Pandora is the single greatest advancement in music broadcasting " to
I don't mind that much seeing classical music selections referred to as "songs" but it would not be too hard to fix. Here's a simple example in Java:
String trackDisplayLabel, genre;
// ... get info on track
if (genre.equals("Classical")) { trackDisplayLabel = "piece"; }
else { trackDisplayLabel = "song"; }
// now, wherever "song" is displayed, use the variable trackDisplayLabel
Words have meaning, and in different contexts the meanings can be related or comletely different. The World is far too complex and varied for the number of words in a given language, therefore the term "song" in Pandora refers to any musical piece regardless whether it is a song intended to be sung by a Human voice, or only played on musical instruments, regardless of the genre.
I think Pandora was created more for pop music, not classical. Even though the distinction is made between instrumental music and "song" music in the classical world, the world of popular music doesn't make the same distinction, often even referring to pieces as "tracks". You make a valid argument, but to ask such a monumental program to change all of its code to incorporate both "song" and "piece" is a bit unrealistic.
I am new to Pandora. I'm puzzled as to why symphonies--in fact all classical music--is referred to as "songs". Why are they not called "pieces", as is common in the world of classical musc?
