The Hyperion Schubert Edition 15 / Margaret Price, Graham Johnson
About This Album
One might have thought that by the third volume of night music, Graham Johnson would have scraped the bottom of the Schubertian barrel. But one would have underestimated both Johnson and Schubert because nearly every song on this disc is a masterpiece of night music, every song wonderfully lyrical, deeply moving, and among the great treasures of German Lieder. And even when they may not be among the great treasures of German Lieder -- and Die blinde Knabe D. 833 can come awfully close to kitsch -- these performances by soprano Margaret Price are so superb, so sensual, and so spiritual that even Die blinde Knabe sounds like a masterpiece. And her performances of what are the undisputed masterpieces of German Lieder sound as great as any music ever written. This is especially true of the four Seidl settings from 1826. Her Der Wanderer an den Mond (D. 870) is at once jaunty and haunting. Her Im Freien (D. 880) is rapturous and blessed. Her Am Fenster (D. 878) compassionate and consoling. Her Sehnsucht (D. 879) is anguished but ultimately triumphant. And as always, Graham Johnson's accompaniments are exemplary and his program notes a model of what notes should be. This is one of the best volumes in Johnson's Schubert edition. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
