Singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson has been playing the college circuit for quite a few years now, impressing coeds with his energetic live show (which often includes a collection of well-known covers) and heartfelt guitar playing. So those already enamored of Nathanson should have no reason for complaint on his second major-label release -- and sixth overall -- Some Mad Hope. The same themes he's dealt with on his previous albums -- regret and desire, roughly -- are here, the same sentimental lyrics and sweet descriptions of past loves, presented in major keys and with clean production. It's typical stuff but it's done well, mixed so Nathanson's emotive voice comes through clearly. But for these same reasons, those unfamiliar with the musician's repertoire may be unimpressed by his overall ordinariness. His melodies, his lyrics, and his arrangements are hard to distinguish from all the Howie Days, Jason Mrazs, Mat Kearneys, and Ari Hests out there. While Nathanson occasionally has a good line or two ("September took the tourists and settled in for good/We could hear the trains again/Brooklyn girls in scarves"), his lyrics neglect subtlety and nuance completely, opting instead for the obvious and straightforward. Not that everything needs to be shadowed in gray and distant allusions, but yet another "Come on and drive me wild" or "I want to be somebody else" is boring and unoriginal and gets lost in the immense pile of clichés, limiting the album's reasons to be listened to. There are a few bits that stand out (the stripped-down "Bulletproof Weeks," the interesting emotional semi-detachment of "Gone"), but most of Some Mad Hope is inoffensive and unremarkable -- certainly not bad, but only good enough to satisfy longtime fans and not win any new ones. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
Doubt anyone has heard of these guys, but the chorus Mattt Nathanson's "Gone" sounds almost EXACTLY like hellogoodbye ' s "All Of Your Love". Again, no one really knows hellogoodbye, but look it up! The two sound the same!
Heartbreak World, Bulletproof Weeks, and All We Are are the best on the album. To the Beat of Our Noisy Hearts and Falling Apart are fun to sing along to obnoxiously.
Come on get Higher is the only song I've ever heard by Nathanson and I'm an instant fan. I agree that facts about the artist are more desirable than an opinion that I may or may not agree with.
It's an OK album but it's not going to change your life, so I'd agree with the review. I got it for cheap off Amazon downloads so it wasn't a terrible deal. And really if you have a Jack Johnson station you're not qualified to critique any music.
this was the only nathanson album i've listened to and i turned into a fan...so this Marisa person is completely off-base. I don't know where some of these reviewers come from, honestly.
In reality, Pandora, I want to know the facts about the artists and their music, not some inept pseudo-journalists ideas about what contitutes good, great or medicore albums.
Wow Marisa Brown, what a horrible review. This album is amazing. You ignored "Wedding Dress" "Sooner Surrender" and "Detroit Waves". All really powerful pop ballads. I bet Marisa only listens to crappy indie.
I couldn't agree more with cindy.roper. Come on get higher was the first song by Matt Nathanson that I had ever heard and I was immediately a fan of his! Pandora played this song on my Jack Johnson radio station and I loved it instantly. Pandora rocks, but that comment on the review of Matt's CD did really suprise me because I'm a fan of Matt with only hearing one song off the album.
I can't stop playing this album over and over like a bad habit. In this case, an enjoyable habit. I of course, like "Come on Get Higher" the song that attracted me to Matt. I also love the softness of "Still" and I'm in love with the words to "Wedding Dress". Great album and I'm on my way to collect more. Keep rockin me out Matt!!
"certainly not bad, but only good enough to satisfy longtime fans and not win any new ones. ~ Marisa Brown" I completely disagree -- it won me over and I'd never before heard of the guy until my Pandora station started playing him, and then he was one of the featured artists on eTown one week a few months ago. I'm now a HUGE fan! ~a 52 year old broad
This album has become a personal favorite. Since downloading it, I have to force myself to listen to other artist because I instantly go right to this one, though I don't think I could get tired of hearing it.
