After the muddled production and ultracomplicated song structures of ...And Justice for All, Metallica decided that they had taken the progressive elements of their music as far as they could and that a simplification and streamlining of their sound was in order. While the assessment made sense from a musical standpoint, it also presented an opportunity to commercialize their music, and Metallica accomplishes both goals. The best songs are more melodic and immediate, the crushing, stripped-down grooves of "Enter Sandman," "Sad but True," and "Wherever I May Roam" sticking to traditional structures and using the same main riffs throughout; the crisp, professional production by Bob Rock adds to their accessibility. "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" avoid the slash-and-burn guitar riffs that had always punctuated the band's ballads; the latter is a full-fledged love song complete with string section, which works much better than might be imagined. The song- and riff-writing slips here and there, a rare occurrence for Metallica, which some longtime fans interpreted as filler next to a batch of singles calculated for commercial success. The objections were often more to the idea that Metallica was doing anything explicitly commercial, but millions more disagreed. In fact, the band's popularity exploded so much that most of their back catalog found mainstream acceptance in its own right, while other progressively inclined speed metal bands copied the move toward simplification. In retrospect, Metallica is a good, but not quite great, album, one whose best moments deservedly captured the heavy metal crown, but whose approach also foreshadowed a creative decline. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
steve huey u suck metallica still rocks and their music is great not good give them some respect for being a 26yr old band and still able to create great music that still sell outs the arenas and stadiums they go to.
perfectly good example of the dreaded sell out bands..... money isnt everything, and its semms metalica shouldve had enough to begin with but than they had to ruin napster too.....
I grew up on this album as my only point of view for metal. I remember requesting it everytime I went to the skating rink..haha Man the early 90's had some kick*$$ music. I agree In Justice was one of the greatest Metallica albums though. After Black though, they got a little less artistic in writing I think..I can't stand the symphony orchestra crap album they produced. Stick with what you know..pure metal
I agree with the majority of the people here. This was the beginning of the end for me and Metallica. When the Black album came out I was so excited to hear new Metallica and I wasn't disappointed. Then came the steady decline... I haven't even listened to much of Death Magnetic simply because I've just lost interest. I'll just go and listen to Master if I need a Metallica fix.
Metallica = music for angry people. (you can tell by reading the posts for this song). Well tonight I'm pissed and Sad But True suits me just fine. Don't blame your problems on Demon Possession, you suck it up all by yourself.
I like their earlier works (if I'm in the mood) esp. The Thing That Should Not Be (which is their best song in my excellent opinion). Everything after Black slowly went downhill.
This is one of the greatest albums ever, great lyrics through out the whole album, the music is bad a** as all hell, i don't see how anyone could hate this album, i guess some people just don't like good music.
There won't be many. I saw the VH1 Behind the Music episode on Metallica, and they put so much effort into this album that they had to go to anger management. They actually had to have a punching bag nearby so they wouldn't hit each other, lol!
Their best album, front to back. In the past few minutes I have been trying to come up with another album, by any band, that matches the integrity and musical fortitude of this album... Thoughts, anyone?!
When I heard Enter Sandman and Wherever I May Roam, I turned the stereo up, but once I bought the tape, I thought "Holy s**t!!" Those songs are good, but there are much better ones on the album. Sad But True is my favorite on this one.
I was really suprised (pleasantly so) to find that this page was not covered with steaming little hate turds. Sabrock is absolutely right. The only thing the band does that fans should care about is the music. If the music changes and you don't like it, that's your problem.
"Enter Sandman" is an awesome song. Not sure why it would end up on a radio station targeting styles of KISS and Alice Cooper, however. You're some crazy cats, Pandora.
Good point about critics; if you keep the same sound, you're unoriginal and boring, but if you change you've sold out. I agree with Newsted: "Yes, we sell out; every seat in the house!" Personally, I don't get the fuss; if you don't like it, fine, but please calm down. Yes, there's one or two weak moments, but on the whole this is a kickass hard rock album. If you're still in the underground you should maybe look elsewhere, but if you like good rock music I recommend this strongly.
well, Dawn Michelle, gotta tell you, Don Mattingly and Metallica both do have something in common- both were the best in the world in the 80's, and both have had a presence in Evansville, IN, since then...... let's live in 2009, ok hon?.......
Overall, this is a great album. Notice the word "great". It's not "excellent", or "superb", just "great". No more no less. I am glad the Metallica made THIS album. Some of the others that followed... not so much.
Metallica changed their sound in a way that gained millions of fans, sold millions of albums, involved a more "crisp, professional production," and created a sound that "other progressively inclined speed metal bands copied", and this is his definition of "a creative decline"? What would have been a more creative approach... to keep spouting out the same sound they had always produced from the beginning? It makes sense to evolve, or else critics say you're stale and have nothing more to offer.
and agreed it is great to hear them finaly rip it up again on magnetic!!!btw im buzzed and on a rant, and noticed this is my girls pandora account not mine, grogalien
one of the things that i really dug about killem all through justice is that they invented along with a few others slayer included a new music that critics could not say was white people ripping off the blues.it was not typical verse chorus crap.a bit of a classical influence imo.i dont think it was proven sellout at time of black album...but following albums proved they had become part of the rockstar mentallity/guns n roses/bobrock lfestyle over musical integrity...and yes music is a business
I think theres a lot of truth in the last line of this review- this album "foreshadowed a creative decline." This was their last good album, everything since has been absolutely horrible. There's a free copy of St Anger on the side of I-40 west of Memphis, thats where I ejected the CD and chucked it out. The case followed it, about 1/4 mi down the road. And I'm hot too, so I have the right to my own opinion. (LOL)
This reviewer can suck it. The more popular songs on this CD are some of the most iconic, badass songs of all time ("Enter Sandman" for example), but this reviewer thinks that Metallica sold out. Well F him. This album melts faces, and is why Metallica is rich as hell.
Wow, who does not like Metallica? Then my next question is, sorry you don't, they came to Evansville, Indiana and gave us quite a few AWESOME shows, so I guess I am prejudiced. Go figure. Anyway NOT in a mood for a debate here, so just voicing my opinion. Thanks!
Verbal & Baron,
Y'all need to get a life... Metallica AND GNR blow. Axel sounds like an a** raped old woman and Lars & co. lost my respect a long time ago, although Death Fagnetic is a step back in the right direction.
he looks like a friggin wack job now I saw him with his wanna be band sometime back.he had a big bandana covering alot of his forehead and his face was just jacked.looked all puffy and wierd.Dude has always just been a complete dooooosh.Never liked GNR.they just sounded odd to me.cant explain it I guess I just like real metal, real heavy music(thus my thoughts on Disturbed)not imitation anything. I see GNR as a one hit wonder that got lucky and rode success for awhile.their music blows alwaysdid
People...the verdict is in and this band still sucks, do yourself a favor, go to the godsmack page and enjoy......
Oh wait, thats WILLOW.......WILLOW, where are you my retarded friend?
