After the muddled production and ultracomplicated song structures of ...And Justice for All, Metallica decided that they had taken the progressive elements of their music as far as they could and that a simplification and streamlining of their sound was in order. While the assessment made sense from a musical standpoint, it also presented an opportunity to commercialize their music, and Metallica accomplishes both goals. The best songs are more melodic and immediate, the crushing, stripped-down grooves of "Enter Sandman," "Sad but True," and "Wherever I May Roam" sticking to traditional structures and using the same main riffs throughout; the crisp, professional production by Bob Rock adds to their accessibility. "The Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters" avoid the slash-and-burn guitar riffs that had always punctuated the band's ballads; the latter is a full-fledged love song complete with string section, which works much better than might be imagined. The song- and riff-writing slips here and there, a rare occurrence for Metallica, which some longtime fans interpreted as filler next to a batch of singles calculated for commercial success. The objections were often more to the idea that Metallica was doing anything explicitly commercial, but millions more disagreed. In fact, the band's popularity exploded so much that most of their back catalog found mainstream acceptance in its own right, while other progressively inclined speed metal bands copied the move toward simplification. In retrospect, Metallica is a good, but not quite great, album, one whose best moments deservedly captured the heavy metal crown, but whose approach also foreshadowed a creative decline. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
i like how everyone says Metallica was best before this album. bullcrap! this album showed that their tallents could be used to make an album/anthem that would change the worlds view of metal. just think, some songs on this album sounded like something never before heard by most people. You all should thank them for starting something that sparked more bands to play metal/hard rock. who knows...we could still all be stuck in a grunge phase if it werent for this type of rock. metalheads pi
... All you Metallica junkies need to shut up about them "selling out" and "their best album was..." It says a lot about a band that can reinvent themselves effectively time and time again. Metallica managed to keep from reproducing the same garbage again and again like so many Metal Bands. I know its what all the "real Metallica fans" say, but its all opinion. I think EVERY Metallica album was good except one major steaming turd... that would be St. Anger. Disagree all you want, but I think tha
Last good album made by Metallica. Not the greatest, but decent. EVERYTHING after has been a disgrace to their origins, including the new one "People have been downloading our songs so much that we need to take one last dying breath so we can afford that gold plated wheelchair" otherwise known as "Death Magnetic."
This was the last good Metallica album until Death Magnetic. true, its not Puppets or lightning, but it wasn't until load that they started to suck. Sandman, holier than thou, thorugh the never, and the struggle within aren't very good. nothing else maters, don;t tread on me, and wolf and man are OK. Sad but true, THe unforgiven, wherever I may roam, god that failed, and misery are great songs.
all this sellout talk is getting tired and is ignorant as f**k. I wonder how many of you still look the same now as you did during metallica's "good" years?
They put more work into this album than any of the previous ones. This is what they wanted to sound like. I believe one of them even sacrificed a marriage.
...and don't even get me started on people who hate them for cutting their hair. Is the hair the reason you listen to someone's music? Really? You don't have any other way of making decisions?
I love Metallica, but some of you apparently don't watch the interviews. Here are my thoughts:
1: They didn't sell out with this album any more than Nirvana sold out with Nevermind. Just because they are finally making money doesn't mean they sold out.
2: If all you like is the old stuff, they did more of that than most bands get before they break up. Doing the same thing for 30 years is working in an office.
3: Not doing new stuff shows a severe lack of talent. No one likes that.
The members of Metallica are more busisness men then musican they knew metal was fading away they thought it was time for a change and that they could maintain album sails and double their sails but they sacrificed their fans they just care about money maybe if Cliff was still alive things would be defern't but I still like their old stuff.
I don't get it. If they had stayed the same, everyone would have complained that everything sounded the same. Don't whine that they evolve their sound every few years. It's what bands do when they stick together for a long time. When has music not evolved. You're logic is the same as Parents in the 50's who thought Elvis was evil, or the 60's with the Beatles. Just take it for what it is, a change.
Uh Metallica is an excellent band. They make great thrash metal, and any other metal you can think of. Only the most talented of bands can make good music while switching up the sound. In other words you are saying they should just sell ...And justice for all, 4 times throughout different album names. It would be nice to get some variation. Why make the same s**t all the time when you can make excellent music no matter the genre? Jackasses.
Yah this album has a few good songs I wonder what it would be like if they still rocked and stayed the same it would be better if they just quit after and justice for all and made that their final album I rather have a world without Metallica then have them sellout.
I like my metal, but even I can admit that while this is a sell-out album, it's not really too bad. It's still unfortunate that they sold out though, 'cuz who knows what kind of awesome albums they would have produced had they stuck on track with their last 4 albums?
This album made a lot of money but its not the greatest Metallica album because Metallica changed their sound and whent mainstream this album got their name out their but this album isn't Metallica or the Metallica I know this album has some good songs but overall it sucks.
ok homosrusintheusa judging from your name it sounds like you take it up the a** and you should make up you f**king mind i think megadeth is ok i dont like the mechanix but i love the four horsemen i dont know if thats weird but whatever
Mega Deth rocks but not every body has to like them but Dave wrote the four horse men and some other Metallica songs so if Dave never was in Metallica then their albums would be difernt so you can say Mega Deth sucks but not Dave because he wrote some Metallicas songs so if you say Dave sucks your saying that Metallica sucks and that the four horse men is one of the worst songs.
