About This Album
Philadelphia trio Metroplex have successfully created a debut album that reveals a fair amount of craft and talent while remaining, unfortunately, completely mediocre. Even the band name, album title, and coolly cerebral cover art show evident wit and intelligence, but the band's take on pop-emo indie rock is depressingly standard issue. Singer Jack Kerrigan's voice is pleasant but utterly forgettable, while guitarist Matt Hanemann and drummer Fred Bohlander exhibit impressive chops but limited melodic imaginations, with the result that most of these ten songs blend into one another with distressing sameness, and the two anomalies, the self-explanatory "Acoustic" and the uncharacteristically poppy rocker "When Tomorrow Comes" (which has the album's best chorus by some distance), sound like they belong on someone else's album. Everything Is Chrome in the Future is an album that's impossible to actively dislike, but it's also hard to recommend without reservations. Perhaps a few more changeups on the level of "When Tomorrow Comes" or the atmospheric instrumental "What to Say" would make Metroplex's next album more worthy of their obvious talent. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
