About This Album
Not to be confused with John Vanderslice's short-lived pop band, but named after the same CIA Cold War program designed to perfect mind-control narcotics, James Ray's MK Ultra is an experimental industrial group of unpleasant guitars and loops of dented tin, recalling bands like KMFDM and the Art of Noise as well as his work with the Sisters of Mercy. While all nine tracks feature an identical oscillating drum-machine engine and cheerless, heavily intonated lyrics, This Is This is a packed, positive experience. Amid the grime, the band chucks in synthesized brass and rave choirs. An unusual move that mimics the industrial disco of Sheep on Drugs and the production of the Beloved -- making for a warm, angry record. ~ Dean Carlson, All Music Guide
