About This Album
Talk about original -- this band has something for just about everyone. They can do quiet, brooding acoustics like "Bankrupt on Selling," dark and pounding thrashers like "Cowboy Dan," funky jump-around emo like "Jesus Christ Was an Only Child" -- just about anything. Throughout the whole album is a white-trash feeling and a sort of down-to-earth analysis of the state of the world, without sounding pretentious. Give this album a listen and you can be sure that you will be singing the rambling, catchy, almost whiny vocals in no time. If you dig indie rock at its very best, go pick this album up. ~ Blake Butler, All Music Guide

Plus, if there was an emo song on this album it would be Doin' the Cockroach. But overall I think Modest Mouse is pretty much an indie rock/noise pop/lo-fi band.

I don't get why they called Jesus Christ was an Only Child emo either Brandon. It doesn't sound like any kind emo song at all.

Please help me understand how in the world Jesus Christ Was an Only Child is emo if only for the sound of the title? I thought emo music had a distinct sound that is nothing like the rockabilly sound of that very particular song.

Not the LP to start new listeners on, though, I don't get that vibe from this message board. My favorite band definitely, but it took me a week of straight listening to get into this album. Best: Long Road (one of the most influential albums of the 90s) and Building (just a compilation album of their older stuff). Get both of these if you haven't already.

been with MM for a long while now, and i think this album is my favortie of theirs. love these guys-- they don't get bogged down with a particular 'sound'.

I had two copies of this bad boy and have been looking for both for quite a few years now. I fell in love with this album long ago when I first heard "Trailer Trash" and I still love it just as much. MM has definitely transformed through the years, and there has definitely been points when I wanted to be so over them. But alas, I still love 'em. It's so great when a band can stick with you for so long. Thanks Pandora for stirring up the nostalgia.

Why did it take me forever to discover modest mouse? They definitely encompass something I never knew I wanted to hear. There's just something about their music. yup, definitely an insta-fan!

Not as good as Long Drive, but it grows on you quick. It's busier than the first album, but you can tell they're building up to something... o r building nothing out of something... w h a t e v e r .
